Short Biography

A.F. Carvalho is an Auxiliary Researcher at i3N/ University of Aveiro. He has a PhD in Engineering Physicist specialized in materials science, especially in the synthesis of carbon-based materials by CVD, as well as in laser processing of graphene by laser pyrolysis (Laser-induced graphene - LIG) and in surface engineering of different materials. He has also specialized in devices' development, testing and integration, particularly sensors and actuators. Presented in December 2020, his PhD 'Development of graphene-based transducers and devices', contributed with new material processing techniques, namely the production of LIG with UV radiation and a novel sublimation-based CVD graphene transfer process, breakthroughs applied for the development of health monitoring piezoresistive sensors and highly sensitive microphones. The UV synthesis of LIG that allowed a doubling in the patterning resolution compared to all previous and the new transfer process was able to suspend 3.7-nm-thick few-layered graphene films over 4-mm-wide cavities, representing the world record for the largest suspended graphene films. he is also first author of a comprehensive critical literature review of the entire field of application of graphene in mechanical transduction (Advanced Materials 2021). He is author of 27 SCI journal publications and 2 conference papers and participated in over 48 communications, including 12 poster and 12 oral presentations (2 invited) as presenting author. He was team member in 16 projects, 9 with industries, two in a European consortium and associate member of the graphene flagship, and PI and co-PI of 3 others.
Through his curricular path, A. Carvalho dedicated himself to parallel activities, including the foundation of the Eng. Physics
Student branch of the UA Academic Association (NEEF-AAUAv) and the students' representation in different boards, highlighting the membership of UA's Pedagogic Council and the UA's representation at an ECIU - European Consortium of Innovative Universities meeting. He is Vice-President of the UA Physics Association (FISUA) developing many scientific outreach activities. He also supports the Physics Department Outreach Team, being a supporter since 2013, in the UA Summer courses. A. Carvalho was astudent mentor in the UA tutelage program and invited as lecturer for different workshops for young students. His pedagogic interests were also demonstrated by his volunteering as teaching assistant and by his supervision of 9 BSc, 5 MSc and 2 PhD students and support of other 11 BSc, MSc and PhD students. Throughout his PhD, leveraging his multidisciplinary background and interests, he was autonomously responsible for the full device development process, namely: synthesis of material, structural, spectroscopic and electrical characterization, development of novel protocols, including the design and assembly specific of instrumentation, control electronics, sensors validation and prototypes manufacturing. Besides his PhD grant by FCT, his plan was awarded and funded by Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian 'Research stimuli program', one of his 7 awards and distinctions.
